Now select the full contents of that textbox, copy them, and paste them into a new text file. Save the file as nescomp.scl. After that, follow the instructions below to add it to WinUAE.

Once the sound effect file is finished, you specify it for WinUAE to use.

Start WinUAE, go to the Floppy drives menu in the left pane of the Properties window. Near the bottom, there is a field that says Drive sound/File:. Click the “…” button and browse to the nescomp.scl file you created. Now hit Rescan.

If you did everything correctly, the floppy slider next to the file field will no longer be grayed out. Move it to anything between 50% and 100%.

The floppy sounds only work while the drive is active (reading or writing data).

Close WinUAE and start it up again. Now insert an ADR disk. You should hear the floppy drive sounds.

4. Conclusion

Converting old Amiga floppy disks to something usable on a PC can be frustrating, especially with the high failure rate that’s common to decades-old media. Expect some bad disks. My success rate was roughly 66% out of 500 disks.

If ADF isn’t working for a specific disk, try SCP. If SCP doesn’t work, give the disk one last chance by cleaning it.

It’s tedious, time-consuming work, but it ensures your data and games are preserved for years to come. Enjoy your Amiga!
