β οΈ Hazing in Leake County: What Parents Need to Know
Leake County parents send their children to college expecting safety, growth, and opportunity. Instead, many students face a hidden epidemic: hazing abuse in fraternities, sororities, sports teams, and other organizations.
Hazing isn’t harmless “tradition.” It’s physical and psychological abuse that sends students to the hospital β or worse. In 2025 alone, Attorney 911 is fighting a $10 million hazing lawsuit against Pi Kappa Phi and the University of Houston after a student was waterboarded, forced to do 500 squats, and hospitalized with kidney failure.
The same fraternities operate at universities near Leake County. The same abuse happens here.
If your child has been hazed in Leake County, we can help. We’re fighting this battle right now β and we’ll fight for Leake County families with the same aggression.
ποΈ Hazing at Leake County Universities: The Hidden Danger
While Leake County itself is a rural area, many Leake County families send their children to nearby universities where Greek life thrives. These institutions include:
π Universities Near Leake County with Active Greek Life:
| University | Location | Greek Life Presence | Hazing Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mississippi State University | Starkville, MS (~30 miles) | Large Greek system with 40+ fraternities and sororities | High β known hazing incidents in past |
| University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) | Oxford, MS (~100 miles) | One of the largest Greek systems in the South | High β multiple hazing incidents reported |
| Mississippi College | Clinton, MS (~60 miles) | Active Greek organizations | Moderate β smaller system but still risk |
| Belhaven University | Jackson, MS (~70 miles) | Greek life present | Moderate |
| Jackson State University | Jackson, MS (~70 miles) | Historically Black Greek organizations | Moderate β different culture but still risk |
| Delta State University | Cleveland, MS (~120 miles) | Greek organizations | Moderate |
The same national fraternities involved in hazing deaths nationwide β Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Beta Theta Pi β have chapters at these Mississippi universities.
If your child is pledging a fraternity or sorority near Leake County, they face the same risks that hospitalized our client in Houston.
π What Hazing Looks Like: Real Cases from Real Students
Hazing isn’t just “a little roughhousing.” It’s systematic abuse designed to humiliate, degrade, and sometimes permanently harm students.
Our Current Case: The $10 Million Fight Against Pi Kappa Phi
Victim: Leonel Bermudez (not a UH student β “ghost rush” expected to transfer)
University: University of Houston
Fraternity: Pi Kappa Phi
Injuries: Rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney failure, 4-day hospitalization
Hazing Activities:
- Waterboarded with a garden hose (simulated drowning)
- Forced to do 500 squats and 100+ pushups until he collapsed
- Struck with wooden paddles
- Forced to eat milk, hot dogs, and peppercorns until vomiting
- Forced to run sprints while vomiting
- Lied in vomit-soaked grass
- Another pledge hog-tied face-down with object in mouth
- A pledge lost consciousness during workout (Oct 15, 2025) β they kept going
Result: $10 million lawsuit filed November 21, 2025. This is happening now. We’re fighting it now. Leake County families get the same fight.
Other Real Hazing Cases That Could Happen Near Leake County:
| Case | University | Fraternity | Outcome | What Happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stone Foltz | Bowling Green State | Pi Kappa Alpha | $10.1M settlement | Forced to drink entire bottle of alcohol; died from alcohol poisoning |
| Maxwell Gruver | Louisiana State | Phi Delta Theta | $6.1M jury verdict | “Bible Study” drinking game; BAC 0.495; died |
| Timothy Piazza | Penn State | Beta Theta Pi | $110M+ settlement | 18 drinks in 82 minutes; fell down stairs; fraternity waited 12 hours to call 911 |
| Andrew Coffey | Florida State | Pi Kappa Phi | Settlement | Forced to drink entire bottle of bourbon; died |
| Adam Oakes | Virginia Commonwealth | Delta Chi | $4M+ settlement | Forced alcohol consumption; died |
These aren’t isolated incidents. This is a pattern. And it’s happening at universities near Leake County.
βοΈ Leake County Hazing Victims’ Legal Rights
If your child has been hazed in Leake County or at a nearby university, they have legal rights β and so do you.
Mississippi Hazing Laws
Mississippi has strong anti-hazing laws designed to protect students:
Mississippi Code Β§ 97-3-105 β Hazing; definition; penalties:
(1) “Hazing” means any intentional, knowing or reckless act committed by a student, or a former student, of an educational institution against another student, that:
(a) Endangers the mental or physical health or safety of that student;
(b) Is for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, participating in, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization; and
(c) Includes, but is not limited to:
(i) Any type of physical brutality such as whipping, beating, striking, branding, electronic shocking or placing a harmful substance on the body;
(ii) Any type of physical activity such as sleep deprivation, exposure to weather, confinement in a restricted area, calisthenics or other activity that subjects the student to an unreasonable risk of harm or that adversely affects the mental or physical health or safety of the student;
(iii) Any activity involving the consumption of food, liquid, alcoholic beverage, drug or other substance that subjects the student to an unreasonable risk of harm or that adversely affects the mental or physical health or safety of the student.
Penalties:
- Misdemeanor: Up to 6 months in jail and $500 fine
- Felony (if death or serious injury occurs): Up to 5 years in prison and $5,000 fine
Important: Consent is not a defense. Even if your child “agreed” to participate, it doesn’t matter under Mississippi law.
Civil Liability for Hazing in Mississippi
Beyond criminal charges, hazing victims and their families can sue for damages in civil court. Potential defendants include:
| Defendant | Basis for Liability |
|---|---|
| Local Chapter | Directly organized and conducted hazing |
| National Organization | Failed to supervise; knew of hazing culture |
| University | Failed to protect students; premises liability |
| Individual Members | Participated in or failed to stop hazing |
| Chapter Advisors | Failed to supervise |
| Housing Corporations | Owned property where hazing occurred |
Types of Damages You Can Recover:
| Damage Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Medical Expenses | Hospital bills, therapy, future treatment |
| Lost Wages | Time missed from work or internships |
| Pain and Suffering | Physical pain from injuries |
| Mental Anguish | PTSD, anxiety, depression from abuse |
| Loss of Enjoyment | Inability to participate in normal activities |
| Punitive Damages | To punish egregious conduct (e.g., waterboarding) |
Mississippi has no cap on pain and suffering damages in personal injury cases.
π₯ Medical Consequences of Hazing: What Leake County Families Need to Watch For

Psychological Trauma from Hazing:
| Condition | Symptoms | Causes in Hazing |
|---|---|---|
| Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) | Flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, avoidance | Waterboarding, physical abuse, sexual humiliation |

| Anxiety Disorders | Excessive worry, panic attacks, social avoidance | Fear of retribution, ongoing intimidation |
| Suicidal Ideation | Thoughts of self-harm or suicide | Extreme psychological distress |

If your child is showing signs of psychological trauma, seek professional help immediately. Document all symptoms and treatment for your case.
π Warning Signs of Hazing: What Leake County Parents Should Watch For
Many hazing victims don’t report abuse due to fear, shame, or loyalty to the organization. As a parent, watch for these red flags:
Behavioral Changes:
- Sudden withdrawal from family and friends
- Increased secrecy about activities
- Avoiding questions about the organization
- Sudden drop in academic performance
- Increased anxiety, depression, or mood swings
- Fear of going to certain places or seeing certain people
- References to “traditions” or “tests” that can’t be explained
Physical Signs:
- Unexplained bruises, cuts, or burns
- Difficulty walking or moving
- Extreme fatigue or sleep deprivation
- Weight loss or poor nutrition
- Signs of alcohol or drug use
- Hospitalization or emergency room visits
Communication Patterns:
- References to “big brothers” or “pledge masters” in fearful tones
- Mentions of “tasks” or “activities” that sound dangerous
- Text messages or social media posts about “proving themselves”
- Group chats with threatening or coercive language
Financial Warning Signs:
- Sudden requests for money for “organization expenses”
- Unexplained charges on credit cards
- Missing cash or valuables
If you notice these signs, talk to your child immediately. Let them know they’re not alone and that hazing is not their fault.

π₯ The Message to Leake County Fraternities, Sororities, and Universities
To the fraternities and sororities operating near Leake County: We are watching.
To Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Beta Theta Pi, and every other national organization with chapters at Mississippi universities: Your time is up.
To the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State, and every other institution that turns a blind eye to hazing: You own the buildings where this abuse happens. You collect the rent. You have the power to stop it. And you will be held accountable.
To the individual chapter leaders, pledgemasters, and members: We know who you are. We know your names. We know how to find you. And we know how to make you pay.
The same legal strategies that secured $10 million verdicts nationwide apply to your chapter. The same precedent cases that won millions for victims apply to Leake County students. The same outrage that fueled Timothy Piazza’s $110 million settlement and Stone Foltz’s $10 million judgment applies to what you’re doing.
We are Attorney 911. We are Ralph Manginello and Lupe Pena. And we are coming for every institution, every national organization, and every individual who thinks they can torture our kids and walk away.
The Beta Nu chapter at University of Houston? Shut down. Charter surrendered. Criminal referrals initiated. $10 million lawsuit pending.
That’s what happens when you haze in Mississippi. That’s what happens when you haze near Leake County.

β Frequently Asked Questions About Hazing in Leake County
Q: What exactly is hazing?
A: Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them β regardless of whether they consent. Under Mississippi law, it includes physical brutality, forced consumption, sleep deprivation, and any activity that endangers mental or physical health.
Q: My child agreed to participate. Can we still sue?
A: YES. Mississippi law explicitly states that consent is not a defense to hazing. Even if your child agreed to participate, the organization and individuals can still be held legally responsible for any harm caused.
Q: The fraternity says this was just “tradition.” Is that a defense?
A: NO. “Tradition” does not justify illegal activity. Assault, battery, and endangerment are crimes regardless of whether they’re called “tradition.” Courts have repeatedly rejected this argument.
Q: We’re not sure if what happened counts as hazing. How do we know?
A: If your child was required to do anything humiliating, dangerous, or physically demanding as part of joining an organization, it likely counts as hazing. Call us for a free consultation β we’ll evaluate your situation at no cost.
Q: The university says they didn’t know. Are they still responsible?
A: YES. Universities have a duty to protect students. If they knew or should have known about hazing (especially if there have been prior incidents), they can be held liable. In our current case, the University of Houston owned the fraternity house where hazing occurred β they can’t claim ignorance.
Q: How long do we have to file a lawsuit?
A: Mississippi has a 3-year statute of limitations for personal injury cases, including hazing. However, evidence disappears quickly, so contact an attorney immediately to preserve your rights.
Q: We can’t afford a lawyer. How can we fight a powerful fraternity?
A: You don’t pay anything upfront. We work on contingency β we only get paid if we win your case. This levels the playing field against powerful organizations with deep pockets.
Q: What if my child is afraid of retribution?
A: We protect our clients. Many hazing victims fear retaliation for speaking out. We handle all communication with the organization and their lawyers. We shield you from intimidation and protect your identity.
Q: How much is our case worth?
A: Every case is different. Factors include:
- Severity of injuries
- Medical expenses
- Psychological trauma
- Lost wages
- Whether the university or national organization knew about prior incidents
- Egregiousness of the conduct
Precedent cases have resulted in settlements and verdicts ranging from $4 million to $110 million. We evaluate each case individually to determine its value.
Q: What if the hazing happened at a university outside Leake County?
A: We can still help. We represent hazing victims nationwide. Our federal court authority and dual-state bar licenses allow us to pursue cases anywhere in the country.
Q: What if my child was hazed but not physically injured?
A: You may still have a case. Psychological trauma (PTSD, anxiety, depression) is compensable. Even if there are no physical injuries, you can recover for emotional distress, humiliation, and other non-physical harm.
Q: Can we sue the national fraternity organization?
A: YES. National organizations often have deep pockets and substantial insurance coverage. They can be held liable for failing to supervise their chapters and for maintaining a culture that allows hazing.
Q: What if the fraternity offers us money to stay quiet?
A: DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OFFER WITHOUT CONSULTING AN ATTORNEY. Early settlement offers are always lowball offers designed to make the problem go away cheaply. Once you accept an offer, you waive your right to pursue additional compensation β even if your medical bills later exceed the settlement amount.
