Hazing Attorney in McKinley County: Protecting Students from Fraternity & Sorority Abuse
If Your Child Was Hazed in McKinley County, You Have Legal Rights — And We Can Help
McKinley County families: When you send your child to college, you expect them to be safe. You trust that universities and Greek organizations will protect them. But all too often, that trust is betrayed.
Hazing isn’t just “tradition” — it’s abuse. It’s torture. And it’s happening right here in McKinley County and at universities across New Mexico and the Southwest. If your child was forced to endure dangerous, humiliating, or life-threatening hazing rituals, you don’t have to stay silent.
Attorney 911 is fighting back. We’re currently litigating a $10 million hazing lawsuit against Pi Kappa Phi and the University of Houston — and we’re ready to bring that same aggressive representation to McKinley County families.

What Is Hazing? And Why Is It So Dangerous?
Hazing is any activity that endangers the physical or mental health of a student for the purpose of initiation, affiliation, or maintaining membership in a group. It’s not just “boys being boys” or “building character.” It’s assault, battery, and psychological torture — and it can have lifelong consequences.
Common Hazing Activities in McKinley County & Across New Mexico
- Forced alcohol consumption (binge drinking, chugging, drinking games)
- Physical abuse (paddling, beatings, branding, excessive exercise)
- Waterboarding or simulated drowning (yes, this happens — we’re suing over it)
- Sleep deprivation (forced all-night activities, early-morning workouts)
- Forced eating (consuming large amounts of food, milk, or non-food items until vomiting)
- Psychological torture (humiliation, degradation, threats of expulsion)
- Sexual abuse or forced nudity
- Exposure to extreme temperatures (stripping in cold weather, heat exhaustion)
- Servitude (acting as personal servants to members)
The Medical Consequences of Hazing
Hazing isn’t just embarrassing — it can be deadly. Some of the most common injuries include:
- Rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown leading to kidney failure — like our client in Houston)
- Alcohol poisoning (can be fatal)
- Traumatic brain injuries (from beatings or falls)
- Hypothermia or heat stroke (from forced exposure)
- Internal bleeding or organ damage (from physical abuse)
- PTSD, anxiety, and depression (long-term psychological trauma)
- Death (since 2000, at least one hazing death has occurred every year in the U.S.)
If your child was hospitalized, traumatized, or worse because of hazing, you have the right to hold the people responsible accountable.
Who Is Liable for Hazing in McKinley County?
When hazing happens, everyone involved shares responsibility — and we will sue them all.
1. The Local Fraternity or Sorority Chapter
- The individuals who planned and carried out the hazing
- The chapter officers (president, pledgemaster, risk manager)
- The members who participated or failed to stop it
2. The National Fraternity/Sorority Organization
- They set the policies (or failed to enforce them)
- They knew about hazing risks (many have prior incidents)
- They have deep pockets — millions in assets and insurance
Example: In our current case, Pi Kappa Phi’s national organization knew about a “hazing crisis” but did nothing to stop it. Now, a student is in the hospital with kidney failure.
3. The University or College
- They have a duty to protect students from known dangers
- Many universities own the fraternity houses where hazing occurs
- They often fail to investigate or punish hazing until it’s too late
Example: The University of Houston owned the fraternity house where our client was waterboarded and forced to do 500 squats. They had a prior hazing incident in 2017 — and still did nothing to prevent it from happening again.
4. Individual Members & Alumni
- Anyone who participated in or facilitated hazing
- Alumni who hosted hazing events at their homes
- Spouses who allowed hazing on their property
Example: In our lawsuit, we’re suing a former member and his spouse because hazing occurred at their residence.
5. Insurance Companies
- National fraternities have liability insurance policies (often $1M+)
- Universities have institutional insurance
- Homeowners’ insurance may cover off-campus hazing
We know how to find the money — and we know how to make them pay.
We’re Already Fighting This Battle — And Winning
🔥 Our Current Case: $10 Million Hazing Lawsuit Against Pi Kappa Phi & UH
What Happened?
Leonel Bermudez, a transfer student, accepted a bid to join Pi Kappa Phi at the University of Houston. Over seven weeks, he was subjected to systematic abuse, including:
- Waterboarding with a garden hose (simulated drowning)
- Forced to do 500 squats and 100+ pushups until he collapsed
- Struck with wooden paddles
- Forced to eat until vomiting, then forced to keep running
- Another pledge lost consciousness during a workout — but they kept going
On November 3, 2025, Bermudez was punished with extreme exercise. He couldn’t stand without help and crawled up the stairs when he got home. The next day, he was too sore to move. By November 6, his mother rushed him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure. He spent four days in the hospital.
The Response?
- Pi Kappa Phi closed the chapter immediately — they knew the lawsuit was coming
- The University of Houston called the hazing “deeply disturbing” and admitted it violated their standards
- We filed a $10 million lawsuit on November 21, 2025
📰 Media Coverage of Our Case
Our lawsuit has already made headlines:
- ABC13 Houston – “Abuse and hazing led to hospitalization of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity pledge”
- KHOU 11 – “$10 million lawsuit filed against UH, fraternity over hazing allegations”
- Houston Chronicle – “UH fraternity hazing lawsuit”
- Houston Public Media – “University of Houston, Pi Kappa Phi fraternity sued for $10 million over alleged hazing”
⚠️ Pi Kappa Phi’s Own Admission
On their website, Pi Kappa Phi wrote:
“Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity closed its Beta Nu Chapter effective November 14, 2025, following violations of the Fraternity’s risk management policy and membership conduct standards.”
Translation: They admitted they broke their own rules — and they knew it was happening.

What McKinley County Families Need to Know About Hazing Laws
📜 New Mexico Hazing Laws
New Mexico has strict anti-hazing laws under NMSA § 29-1-15. Hazing is a misdemeanor, and if it causes serious bodily injury or death, it can be a felony.
Key Points:
- Consent is NOT a defense — Even if your child “agreed” to participate, the law says it doesn’t matter.
- Universities must report hazing — If they fail to do so, they can be held liable.
- Organizations can be penalized — Fraternities and sororities can be fined, suspended, or banned.
- Individuals can face criminal charges — Up to 1 year in jail for misdemeanor hazing, and up to 3 years for felony hazing.
🏛️ Civil Lawsuits: Holding Institutions Accountable
Criminal charges punish the individuals — but civil lawsuits hold the institutions responsible. This is where real change happens.
In a civil hazing lawsuit, you can sue for:
- Medical bills (hospital stays, therapy, future treatment)
- Lost wages (if your child had to miss work or school)
- Pain and suffering (physical and emotional trauma)
- Punitive damages (to punish the organization and prevent future hazing)
Precedent Cases Show Hazing Victims Can Win Millions:
| Case | Fraternity | University | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone Foltz | Pi Kappa Alpha | Bowling Green State | $10.1 million settlement |
| Maxwell Gruver | Phi Delta Theta | Louisiana State | $6.1 million jury verdict |
| Timothy Piazza | Beta Theta Pi | Penn State | $110+ million settlement |
| Andrew Coffey | Pi Kappa Phi | Florida State | Confidential settlement |
| Our Case | Pi Kappa Phi | University of Houston | $10 million lawsuit pending |
McKinley County families: These same results are possible for you.
What to Do If Your Child Was Hazed in McKinley County
🚨 Step 1: Get Medical Help Immediately
- If your child is injured, take them to the hospital right away
- Rhabdomyolysis, alcohol poisoning, and internal injuries can be life-threatening
- Medical records are critical evidence for your case
📱 Step 2: Preserve All Evidence
Hazing cases are won or lost on evidence. Save everything:
✅ Text messages & group chats (GroupMe, Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp)
✅ Photos & videos (of injuries, hazing activities, fraternity house)
✅ Social media posts (anything referencing hazing)
✅ Medical records (hospital bills, doctor’s notes, therapy records)
✅ Witness statements (names and contact info of other pledges)
✅ Fraternity documents (pledge manuals, schedules, rules)
⚠️ WARNING: Do NOT delete anything — even if it seems embarrassing. Destroying evidence can hurt your case.
🚫 Step 3: Do NOT Talk to the Fraternity, Sorority, or University Without a Lawyer
- They will try to control the narrative
- They may pressure your child to sign something
- They may offer a lowball settlement before you know the full extent of damages
- Anything your child says can be used against them
Instead, call us first. We’ll handle all communication with the fraternity, university, and insurance companies.
📞 Step 4: Call Attorney 911 Immediately

The Warning to Fraternities & Universities Near McKinley County
To the fraternities and universities operating near McKinley County:
We are watching.
We know you have prior hazing incidents. We know you have failed to enforce your own policies. We know you have allowed dangerous traditions to continue.
And when you haze students in McKinley County or anywhere in New Mexico, we will hold you accountable.
- Pi Kappa Phi — We’re already suing you for $10 million. Your chapter could be next.
- Sigma Alpha Epsilon — We know about your history. We’re coming for you too.
- University of New Mexico, NMSU, ENMU — If you own the fraternity houses where hazing happens, you’re liable too.
The Beta Nu chapter at UH learned this the hard way. Your chapter could be next.
McKinley County Families: You Are Not Alone
Hazing victims often feel shame, fear, and isolation. They worry about retaliation, social ostracism, or being labeled a “snitch.” They may feel loyalty to the organization that abused them.
But you are not alone.
- 95% of hazing victims do not report it — but silence only protects the abusers.
- Hazing happens in fraternities, sororities, sports teams, marching bands, ROTC, and clubs — it’s not just Greek life.
- Universities and national organizations know about hazing — but they don’t stop it until someone gets hurt or dies.
We are here to help you break the silence.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hazing Lawsuits in McKinley County
💰 How much is my hazing case worth?
Every case is different, but hazing lawsuits have resulted in millions of dollars in compensation. Factors that increase case value include:
- Severity of injuries (hospitalization, surgery, permanent damage)
- Egregiousness of conduct (waterboarding, forced consumption, physical abuse)
- Prior incidents at the same chapter/university (shows they knew the risks)
- University ownership of the property (premises liability)
- Psychological trauma (PTSD, anxiety, depression)
Our current case is demanding $10 million — and we believe that’s a fair number given the severity of the abuse.
⏳ How long do I have to file a lawsuit?
In New Mexico, you generally have 2 years from the date of injury to file a personal injury lawsuit. Do not wait. Evidence disappears, witnesses forget, and your legal rights expire.
👨⚖️ Can I sue if my child “consented” to hazing?
Yes. New Mexico law says consent is not a defense to hazing. Even if your child “agreed” to participate, the law says it doesn’t matter. The fraternity, sorority, and university are still liable.
💵 Do I have to pay upfront for a lawyer?
No. We work on a contingency fee basis — you pay $0 upfront. We only get paid if we win your case. Our fee comes out of the settlement or verdict, so there’s no financial risk to you.
🌎 Can you help if the hazing didn’t happen in McKinley County?
Yes. While we’re based in Texas, we represent hazing victims nationwide, including in New Mexico and the Southwest. We can help whether the hazing happened at:
- UNM, NMSU, ENMU, or other New Mexico schools
- Out-of-state universities (Arizona, Colorado, Texas, etc.)
- Military academies or private schools
We offer video consultations and travel to you for depositions and trials.
📞 What should I do if my child was hazed?
- Get medical help immediately — even if injuries seem minor
- Preserve all evidence (texts, photos, videos, witness info)
