🏛️ The Hazing Crisis in Mercer County — What Families Need to Know

Hazing isn’t just happening at big universities in other states. It’s happening right here in Mercer County, Illinois. Whether your child attends a local college, commutes to a nearby university, or is involved in Greek life, sports teams, or other student organizations — hazing is a real and dangerous threat in our community.

Mercer County Parents: Your Child Could Be Next

Right now, in Illinois and across the country, students are being subjected to:

  • Physical abuse — beatings, paddling, forced exercise to exhaustion
  • Waterboarding and simulated drowning — yes, this is happening at colleges near Mercer County
  • Forced alcohol consumption — leading to alcohol poisoning and death
  • Sleep deprivation — causing accidents and health problems
  • Psychological torture — humiliation, degradation, threats
  • Sexual abuse — forced nudity, sexual acts, carrying sexual objects

This isn’t tradition. This isn’t bonding. This is abuse. And it’s illegal.

⚠️ The Shocking Truth: Hazing Happens at Mercer County Schools Too

While we’re currently litigating a $10 million hazing lawsuit against Pi Kappa Phi and the University of Houston — a case involving waterboarding, forced eating, and kidney failure — the same fraternities and organizations operate right here in Mercer County and across Illinois.

Universities and Colleges Near Mercer County with Greek Life:

Mercer County is surrounded by institutions where hazing occurs, including:

  • Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) — Active Greek life presence
  • Western Illinois University (Macomb, IL) — Strong Greek system
  • Black Hawk College (Moline, IL) — Student organizations with hazing risks
  • University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign, IL) — One of the largest Greek systems in the country
  • Illinois State University (Normal, IL) — Multiple documented hazing incidents
  • Bradley University (Peoria, IL) — Greek life with hazing risks

The same national fraternities involved in our current lawsuit — Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Theta, and others — have active chapters at these Illinois schools.

If your child is pledging a fraternity or sorority near Mercer County, they face the same risks that hospitalized our client in Houston.

🔥 Our Current Case: The $10 Million Warning to Mercer County Fraternities

Bermudez v. Pi Kappa Phi — The Case That Proves Hazing is Torture

What Happened:
Leonel Bermudez, a young man excited about joining Pi Kappa Phi at the University of Houston, was subjected to weeks of systematic abuse during the Fall 2025 pledge process. The hazing included:

  • Waterboarding with a garden hose — simulated drowning, a form of torture
  • Forced to perform 500 squats and 100+ pushups — causing severe rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown)
  • Struck with wooden paddles — physical assault with weapons
  • Forced to eat milk, hot dogs, and peppercorns until vomiting — then forced to continue exercising
  • Stripped to underwear in cold weather — exposure and humiliation
  • Forced to carry a fanny pack with objects of sexual nature — sexual humiliation
  • Another pledge hog-tied with an object in his mouth for over an hour — false imprisonment

The Result:
On November 3, 2025, Bermudez was punished with extreme physical activity for missing an event. He became so exhausted he could not stand without help. He crawled up the stairs when he got home. The next day, he couldn’t move. His condition worsened. On November 6, his mother rushed him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney failure. He spent three nights and four days hospitalized, fighting for his life.

The Aftermath:

  • Pi Kappa Phi closed the chapter immediately — but only after the hospitalization
  • The university called the conduct “deeply disturbing”
  • Our law firm filed a $10 million lawsuit on November 21, 2025
  • Multiple media outlets covered the story, including ABC13, KHOU 11, Houston Chronicle, and Houston Public Media

Why This Matters to Mercer County Families:

  • This didn’t happen in a far-off state. It happened at a major university — the same type of institution your child attends.
  • The same fraternities that hazed Bermudez have chapters at Illinois universities near Mercer County.
  • The same negligence that allowed this to happen at UH exists at institutions near Mercer County.
  • If your child is being hazed in Mercer County, we will fight for you with the same aggression we’re bringing to this case.

💰 Hazing Costs Millions — We Have the Receipts

Hazing isn’t just morally wrong — it’s expensive. When institutions allow hazing to continue, they pay millions in settlements and verdicts. Here’s what juries and courts have awarded in recent hazing cases:

Case University Fraternity Outcome Amount
Stone Foltz Bowling Green State Pi Kappa Alpha Settlement $10.1 million
Maxwell Gruver Louisiana State Phi Delta Theta Jury Verdict $6.1 million
Timothy Piazza Penn State Beta Theta Pi Settlement $110+ million (estimated)
Adam Oakes Virginia Commonwealth Delta Chi Settlement $4+ million
Bermudez University of Houston Pi Kappa Phi Lawsuit Pending $10 million sought

Mercer County Families: These verdicts and settlements prove that hazing cases win big. The same legal strategies apply to Illinois cases. If your child has been hazed at a Mercer County institution or nearby university, you have a valid legal claim worth millions.

⚖️ Illinois Hazing Laws — What Mercer County Victims Need to Know

Illinois Anti-Hazing Statute (720 ILCS 5/12C-55)

Illinois law defines hazing as:

“Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act directed against a student for the purpose of being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization, if the act:

  • (1) Endangers the physical health or safety of the student; or
  • (2) Causes mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule.”

This means:

  • Consent is NOT a defense — Even if your child “agreed” to participate, it doesn’t matter. Hazing is illegal regardless of consent.
  • It applies to ALL organizations — fraternities, sororities, sports teams, marching bands, ROTC, clubs, and more.
  • It applies ON and OFF campus — Hazing doesn’t have to happen at school to be illegal.

Criminal Penalties in Illinois:

Offense Level Conduct Punishment
Class A Misdemeanor Hazing that does NOT cause death or great bodily harm Up to 1 year in jail; up to $2,500 fine
Class 4 Felony Hazing that causes death or great bodily harm 1-3 years in prison; up to $25,000 fine

Mercer County Families: If your child has been hazed, the individuals responsible could face jail time. But criminal charges don’t compensate your family for medical
