Hazing Lawyers in Summit County, Utah – Protecting Students & Holding Institutions Accountable

Hazing Happens in Summit County – And It’s Not Just “Tradition”

Summit County families send their children to college expecting them to be safe. They trust universities and Greek organizations to provide a positive, enriching experience. But for too many students in Summit County and across Utah, that trust is broken by hazing – a dangerous, often illegal practice disguised as “tradition.”

At Attorney 911, we’re fighting back. Right now, we’re litigating a $10 million hazing lawsuit against Pi Kappa Phi and the University of Houston – a case that has exposed waterboarding, forced exercise to the point of kidney failure, and a culture of abuse that exists in fraternities nationwide, including right here in Summit County.

If your child has been hazed in Summit County or anywhere in Utah, we can help. Our experienced hazing attorneys serve Summit County families from our offices in Houston, Austin, and Beaumont – and we’re ready to fight for justice in your case.

What Is Hazing? Summit County Parents Need to Know

Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them – regardless of whether the person consents. In Utah, hazing is a crime, and victims have the right to hold those responsible accountable.

Common Hazing Activities in Summit County & Across Utah

Hazing isn’t just “boys being boys” or “harmless fun.” It’s abuse, and it can cause serious physical and psychological harm. Some of the most dangerous hazing practices we’ve seen in our cases include:

Forced Alcohol Consumption – Binge drinking, chugging, or drinking games that lead to alcohol poisoning, blackouts, or death
Extreme Physical Punishment – Hundreds of push-ups, squats, or other exercises until muscles break down (rhabdomyolysis), leading to kidney failure
Waterboarding & Simulated Drowning – A form of torture that can cause severe psychological trauma
Forced Eating or Drinking to Vomiting – Consuming large amounts of milk, hot dogs, or other substances until the victim vomits and is forced to continue
Sleep Deprivation – Late-night activities, early-morning tasks, and disrupted sleep leading to exhaustion, accidents, or mental health crises
Physical Assault – Being struck with wooden paddles, belts, or other objects
Sexual Humiliation & Abuse – Forced nudity, carrying sexual objects, or other degrading acts
Psychological Torture – Threats of expulsion, social ostracization, or retaliation for speaking out

This isn’t “tradition.” It’s abuse. And it’s happening in Summit County.

Hazing in Summit County: The Reality Utah Families Face

Summit County is home to Park City, Kamas, Coalville, and other communities where families value education, safety, and strong community values. But even in Summit County, hazing exists – and it’s often hidden until it’s too late.

Universities & Colleges Near Summit County Where Hazing Occurs

While Summit County itself doesn’t have a major university, many Summit County students attend colleges and universities across Utah where hazing is a known problem, including:

🎓 University of Utah (Salt Lake City) – One of Utah’s largest universities, with a significant Greek life presence
🎓 Utah State University (Logan) – Active fraternities and sororities with documented hazing incidents
🎓 Brigham Young University (Provo) – While BYU has strict honor code policies, hazing still occurs in clubs and teams
🎓 Weber State University (Ogden) – Greek organizations with reported hazing incidents
🎓 Southern Utah University (Cedar City) – Smaller but still has Greek life and hazing risks
🎓 Utah Valley University (Orem) – Growing Greek system with hazing concerns
🎓 Westminster College (Salt Lake City) – Private institution with Greek life and hazing risks

The same national fraternities and sororities involved in high-profile hazing cases operate in Utah. If your child is pledging a fraternity or sorority near Summit County, they face the same risks we’re fighting in our current case.

The Devastating Consequences of Hazing in Summit County

Hazing doesn’t just leave emotional scars – it can destroy lives. Some of the most serious consequences we’ve seen in our cases include:

Physical Injuries

⚠️ Rhabdomyolysis – Muscle breakdown from extreme exercise, leading to kidney failure (like our client in the UH case)
⚠️ Alcohol Poisoning – Can cause death (like Stone Foltz at Bowling Green State)
⚠️ Traumatic Brain Injury – From beatings, falls, or lack of oxygen
⚠️ Broken Bones & Internal Injuries – From physical abuse or accidents
⚠️ Hypothermia or Heatstroke – From exposure to extreme weather

Psychological Trauma

💔 PTSD – From waterboarding, assault, or witnessing abuse
💔 Anxiety & Depression – Fear of retaliation, social isolation
💔 Suicidal Ideation – Many hazing victims report feeling hopeless
💔 Trust Issues – Difficulty forming relationships after betrayal

Academic & Financial Fallout

📉 Dropped Grades – From sleep deprivation, stress, or physical pain
📉 Lost Scholarships – If academic performance suffers
📉 Medical Bills – Hospitalization, therapy, and long-term treatment
📉 Career Impact – Some victims never fully recover and struggle professionally

Hazing doesn’t just hurt students – it devastates Summit County families.

Who Is Liable When Hazing Happens in Summit County?

When hazing occurs, multiple parties can be held legally responsible. In our current case against Pi Kappa Phi and the University of Houston, we’re pursuing:

Defendant Why They’re Liable
Local Fraternity/Sorority Chapter Directly organized and conducted hazing
National Fraternity/Sorority Failed to supervise, enforce anti-hazing policies
University/College Failed to protect students, knew or should have known about hazing
Housing Corporation Owned/controlled property where hazing occurred
Chapter Officers (President, Pledgemaster, etc.) Leadership responsibility; directed hazing
Individual Members Participated in or failed to stop hazing
Alumni & Hosts Allowed hazing at their homes or events

Summit County families: If your child was hazed, we will identify every responsible party and hold them accountable.

Utah Hazing Laws: What Summit County Families Need to Know

Utah has strong laws against hazing, and victims have legal rights. Under Utah Code § 76-5-107.5, hazing is defined as:

“Any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health or safety of another for the purpose of initiation, admission, affiliation, or continued membership in the group.”

Utah Hazing Laws & Penalties

Offense Penalties
Hazing (Class B Misdemeanor) Up to 6 months in jail, $1,000 fine
Hazing Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Class A Misdemeanor) Up to 1 year in jail, $2,500 fine
Hazing Causing Death (Third-Degree Felony) Up to 5 years in prison, $5,000 fine
Failure to Report Hazing (Class B Misdemeanor) Up to 6 months in jail, $1,000 fine

Important: Consent is NOT a defense in Utah. Even if your child “agreed” to participate, the law still holds hazers accountable.

Summit County Hazing Victims Have the Right to Compensation

If your child was hazed in Summit County or anywhere in Utah, they may be entitled to financial compensation for:

💰 Medical Expenses – Hospital bills, therapy, rehabilitation
💰 Pain & Suffering – Physical and emotional trauma
💰 Lost Wages – Time missed from work or internships
💰 Educational Damages – Tuition refunds, lost scholarships
💰 Punitive Damages – To punish egregious conduct (like waterboarding or torture)

In our current case, we’re seeking $10 million for our client’s injuries. While every case is different, Summit County families should know that hazing cases can result in significant financial recovery.

What to Do If Your Child Was Hazed in Summit County

If your child has been hazed, time is critical. Evidence disappears, memories fade, and legal deadlines approach. Here’s what Summit County families should do immediately:

Step 1: Seek Medical Attention

  • Even if injuries seem minor, get a medical evaluation
  • Some conditions (like rhabdomyolysis) may not show symptoms right away
  • Medical records are critical evidence in your case

Step 2: Preserve All Evidence

📱 Save all communications – Texts, GroupMe messages, Snapchats, emails
📸 Take photos – Injuries, hazing locations, any objects used
🎥 Record videos – If safe to do so, document any ongoing abuse
📝 Write down everything – Dates, times, names of those involved
👥 Get witness information – Other pledges, bystanders, friends

Step 3: Do NOT Confront the Organization Alone

  • Do not talk to fraternity/sorority leaders without legal counsel
  • Do not sign anything from the organization or university
  • Do not post about the incident on social media

Step 4: Contact a Summit County Hazing Lawyer Immediately

  • Utah has a 4-year statute of limitations for personal injury cases, but evidence disappears fast
  • The sooner we get involved, the stronger your case will be
  • We offer free consultations and work on contingency – you pay nothing unless we win

Our Current Case: A Warning to Summit County Fraternities & Universities

The $10 Million Hazing Lawsuit Against Pi Kappa Phi & UH

What Happened:
Leonel Bermudez, a transfer student not yet enrolled at UH, accepted a bid to join Pi Kappa Phi in September 2025. Over the next 7 weeks, he was subjected to systematic abuse, including:

  • Waterboarding with a garden hose (simulated drowning)
  • Forced to do 500 squats, 100 pushups, and other extreme exercises until he collapsed
  • Struck with wooden paddles
  • Forced to eat until vomiting, then forced to continue running
  • Another pledge collapsed unconscious during a workout – and they kept going

On November 3, 2025, Bermudez was punished for missing an event. He was forced to exercise until he couldn’t stand without help. He crawled up the stairs when he got home and was rushed to the hospital the next day with severe rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure, requiring 4 days of inpatient care.

The Aftermath:

  • Pi Kappa Phi closed the UH chapter – but only after our client was hospitalized
  • The university called the conduct “deeply disturbing”
  • We filed a $10 million lawsuit on November 21, 2025

Why This Matters to Summit County:

  • Pi Kappa Phi has 150+ chapters nationwide – including in Utah
  • The same “traditions” that hospitalized our client happen in Summit County
  • Universities near Summit County face the same liability failures as UH
  • If your child is being hazed in Summit County, we will fight for you just like we’re fighting in Houston

Frequently Asked Questions About Hazing in Summit County

Q: My child was hazed, but they “consented.” Can we still sue?

A: YES. Under Utah law, consent is NOT a defense to hazing. Even if your child “agreed” to participate, the law still holds hazers accountable.

Q: The fraternity says it was just “tradition.” Is that a defense?

A: NO. “Tradition” does not justify abuse. Waterboarding, forced drinking, and physical assault are not traditions – they’re crimes.

Q: What if the hazing happened off-campus? Can the university still be held liable?

A: YES. If the university knew or should have known about the hazing, they can still be held responsible. Many hazing incidents occur at off-campus fraternity houses or private residences, but universities still have a duty to protect students.

Q: How long do we have to file a hazing lawsuit in Utah?

A: Utah has a 4-year statute of limitations for personal injury cases. However, evidence disappears quickly, so it’s critical to act immediately.

Q: Can we sue the national fraternity, or just the local chapter?

A: BOTH. National fraternities and sororities have deep pockets and insurance policies that can provide significant compensation. In our current case, we’re suing both the local chapter and the national organization.

Q: What if my child is afraid of retaliation?

A: We understand. Many hazing victims fear speaking out. We will protect your identity and take steps to prevent retaliation. Our client in the UH case is also fearful – and we’re fighting to protect him.

Q: How much is a hazing case worth?

Every case is different, but hazing cases can result in significant compensation, including:

  • Medical expenses (past and future)
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages
  • Punitive damages (to punish egregious conduct)
In our current case, we’re seeking $10 million.

Q: Do we need a local Summit County lawyer?

A: No. While some firms may claim to be “local,” hazing cases require specialized expertise. We represent Summit County families nationwide and have the experience to handle even the most complex cases.
