🔍 What Is Hazing? (And Why It’s Illegal in North Carolina)
Hazing is any intentional, reckless, or negligent act that endangers a student’s physical or mental health for the purpose of pledging, initiation, or membership in a group. In North Carolina, hazing is a criminal offense, and victims have the right to pursue legal action.
Common Hazing Practices in Yancey County & Beyond
✅ Physical abuse – Beatings, paddling, forced exercise to exhaustion
✅ Forced consumption – Alcohol, food, or non-food items (leading to alcohol poisoning, choking, or vomiting)
✅ Psychological torture – Sleep deprivation, humiliation, threats
✅ Dangerous stunts – Blindfolded activities, extreme weather exposure
✅ Sexual harassment/assault – Forced nudity, inappropriate touching
If your child experienced any of these, they may have a legal case.
💔 The Devastating Effects of Hazing
Hazing isn’t “harmless fun”—it can lead to:
- Physical injuries (broken bones, internal bleeding, rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure)
- Psychological trauma (PTSD, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts)
- Academic struggles (missed classes, failing grades, dropping out)
- Financial burdens (medical bills, therapy costs, lost scholarships)
In the worst cases, hazing kills. Since 2000, there has been at least one hazing-related death every year in the U.S.—and many more go unreported.

We hold them ALL accountable.
