π¨ Hazing Lawyers for Kanawha County Families: Holding Fraternities and Universities Accountable
Kanawha County parents, students, and families: If your child has been hazed at a fraternity, sorority, sports team, or any student organization in or near Kanawha County, you are not alone. What happened to Leonel Bermudez at the University of Houston could happen to any student at any college near Kanawha County. The same fraternities operate here. The same culture of abuse exists. And the same institutions fail to protect our children.
At Attorney 911, we are fighting this battle right now. We’ve filed a $10 million lawsuit against Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and the University of Houston for what they did to our client β waterboarding, forced exercise until kidney failure, and systematic abuse. This same fight is coming to Kanawha County.
β οΈ The Hazing Crisis in Kanawha County
Hazing isn’t just happening in Texas. It’s happening right here in Kanawha County and across West Virginia. The same national fraternities that waterboarded our client have chapters at universities near Kanawha County. The same “traditions” that hospitalized Leonel Bermudez exist in Kanawha County Greek life. And the same negligence that allowed this to happen at UH exists at Kanawha County institutions.
Kanawha County families need to know:
- Hazing is illegal in West Virginia β it violates state criminal law and civil liability standards
- Consent is not a defense β even if your child “agreed” to participate, the law says that doesn’t matter
- Universities are responsible β if they own or control the property where hazing occurs, they can be held liable
- National organizations are liable β they have the power to stop hazing and the resources to pay when they don’t
- Individual perpetrators can be sued personally β the students who abused your child can be held accountable
π What Happened to Leonel Bermudez β And What Could Happen to Your Child
Leonel Bermudez accepted a bid to join Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at the University of Houston. What followed was weeks of torture disguised as “tradition”:
- Waterboarding β simulated drowning with a garden hose while doing calisthenics
- Forced eating β milk, hot dogs, and peppercorns consumed until vomiting, then forced to keep running
- Extreme physical punishment β 500 squats, 100+ pushups, bear crawls, 100-yard crawls
- Wooden paddles β being struck repeatedly
- Sleep deprivation β forced to drive fraternity members during early morning hours
- Psychological torture β carrying sexual objects, being hog-tied, threats of expulsion
On November 3, 2025, Bermudez was punished for missing an event. He was forced to perform extreme exercises until he could not stand without help. He crawled up the stairs when he got home. The next day, he couldn’t move. His mother rushed him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney failure. He spent four days in the hospital fighting for his life.
This isn’t “hazing.” This is torture. And it’s happening to students in Kanawha County.
ποΈ Who Is Responsible for Hazing in Kanawha County?
In our lawsuit, we’re holding everyone accountable who participated in or allowed the abuse:
| Defendant | Why They’re Liable |
|---|---|
| Local fraternity/sorority chapter | Directly organized and conducted hazing |
| National organization | Knew about hazing crisis; failed to enforce anti-hazing policies |
| University/college | Owns or controls property; failed to protect students despite prior incidents |
| Housing corporation | Owns the property where hazing occurred |
| Chapter officers | Leadership responsibility; directed or allowed hazing |
| Individual members | Participated in or witnessed hazing and failed to stop it |
| Alumni | Hosted hazing at their homes; premises liability |
Kanawha County families: If your child was hazed, we will sue everyone responsible β not just the students, but the institutions that enabled them.
π° What Kanawha County Hazing Victims Can Recover
Hazing cases result in multi-million dollar settlements and verdicts. Here’s what Kanawha County victims can recover:
Economic Damages
- Medical bills β hospital stays, treatment, rehabilitation
- Future medical expenses β ongoing kidney monitoring, potential dialysis/transplant, mental health care
- Lost wages β time missed from work during recovery
- Lost earning capacity β if injuries affect future career
- Educational disruption β tuition, scholarships, delayed graduation
Non-Economic Damages
- Physical pain and suffering β the agony of rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure, forced exercise
- Mental anguish β trauma from waterboarding, humiliation, threats
- Emotional distress β PTSD, anxiety, depression, fear of retribution
- Loss of enjoyment of life β impact on college experience, social life, physical activities
Punitive Damages
When conduct is egregious, intentional, or shows reckless disregard for safety, Kanawha County juries can award punitive damages to punish the wrongdoers and prevent future abuse. This is especially appropriate when:
- Institutions knew about prior hazing incidents and did nothing
- Abuse was systematic and prolonged
- Torture-like activities (waterboarding, paddling) were involved
- Defendants tried to cover up or minimize the abuse
Precedent cases show Kanawha County victims can recover millions:

- $6.1 million jury verdict β Maxwell Gruver (Phi Delta Theta, LSU)
- $110+ million β Timothy Piazza (Beta Theta Pi, Penn State)
- $10 million β Our current lawsuit (Pi Kappa Phi, University of Houston)

π What Kanawha County Families Should Do If Their Child Is Hazed
IMMEDIATE STEPS:
- Get medical attention β Even if injuries seem minor, get checked. Rhabdomyolysis and alcohol poisoning symptoms can be delayed.
- Preserve evidence β Take photos of injuries, save all text messages, social media posts, and communications about hazing.
- Document everything β Write down what happened, who was involved, where it occurred, and when.
- Do NOT confront the organization β They will destroy evidence, coordinate stories, and intimidate witnesses.
- Do NOT post on social media β Anything you post can be used against you.
- Contact an attorney immediately β The statute of limitations is short (typically 2 years), and evidence disappears fast.

| Signing anything from the organization | May waive your legal rights without you realizing |
| Posting about the incident on social media | Even innocent posts can be twisted to minimize your injuries |
